I read the whole thing and seriously it was impressive Julianne. Normally I reply directly to the promotion notes and tell the person if their content belongs to my interest or not, but this seriously seriously seriously js by the title attracted me. Very helpful and great writing style. Subbed!
If you like my work, i might be the guy to sub too! (ONLY if you like my work and you are interested, I need actual readers!)
Hey Julianne! Thank you for this!Very useful tips. I honestly have never thought about making a chart to note how much time I invested and what progress I've made. I think writing down, at the end of the day, the little progress we reached with the effort we've put in is such a beautiful gesture! It's like a thank you note from us to ourselves! ❤️
I'm learning Substack now (this is my third day haha), so I will make sure to use your tips.
Also, thank you for mentioning looking for a therapist! I was trained in psychoanalysis and I have been a therapist in a past life. I'd say that many self-sabotage habits are the result of unconscious mechanisms. Some people can get around them with practical advice, with learning how to hear what our unconscious is communicating by noticing nuances in our pattenrs, but some people benefit from a therapist. Many times, it's really not about pure grit.
I'm very glad it was helpful, since most things I write on Substack are to help people in any way I can. It makes me very happy if my experience or my insight can be useful to someone.
I really hope the things you adopt further will work out for you.
It is also meaningful to be backed up by a person who's dealt with psychoanalysis.
Thank you for reading and for your comment, I appreciate it a lot! And good luck on Substack!
Social media makes it so hard not to compare yourself to others, as well. For a long time I had to stay off it. I'm back now, and Substack feels like a much healthier environment than other platforms.
Because you're right, it's hard to motivate yourself to train for a 5K when your friend's friend keeps posting their ultra-marathon times.
As someone who is trying to get better on guitar this read felt really personal 🙃 I’ve been at it on and off for years - always discouraged by the parts that are difficult to master but always brought back by my absurd level of love for music 🖤 thanks for this article!

Yes, exactly, that’s why we need to teach ourselves this skill.

Thank you for reading!
Very helpful and straightforward. Thank you 😊
I’m glad you think this way.
This was a good essay, and I totally agree with it. It is takes courage to start, but it also takes courage to continue after trying and failing.
